ORIGIN OF THE SURNAME TERRY
The surname Terry
is distinct in origin from the forename Terry. The surname
is from the Germanic Theodoric; the forename from the Latin Terentius or
Terence. As a family name, Terry, which is rated Irish and English, had a
circuitous development. The source Theodoric (people-rule) was picked up
by the French, turned into Thierry and passed along to the British in the
11th century. In Britain it underwent the usual changes. In 1086 it was Tedric,
in 1200 Tericus, in the 1400's Terrick and in the 1600s Terye. By the 18th
century it has settled on Terr(e)y. The name turned up in Ireland about the
12th-13th century as Therry, Tyrry and Tirry, especially around Kilkenny
and Cork. For the last several centuries it has been spelled Terry.

M. Terry From: Warner Robins GA
I have fairly good genealogical information on my Terry line. It came to Alabama in the
1820's via a James "Jemmes" Terry from Edgefield County, SC. I believe he may
have descended from the James Terry of Virginia (ca. 1725). My father was Charles W.
Terry, Jr. (b.Hale County, AL--1913). His father was Charles W. Terry (b.
Hale County, AL--1878). His father was Hilliard R. Terry (b. Hale County,
AL--1850's). I have further information for anyone interested.
Mike,
I hope this information might be helpful.
Also, looking for hints to fill in the gaps in my own Terry research. Following is info on
my Edgefield County, SC Terry ancestors.
Early 19th century, James and Susanna (Clements) Terry migrated from South Carolina
(probably Edgefield County) to Bibb County, Alabama and settled near the
Perry County line. Their children: Stephen Terry, William Terry (b. SC ca. 1810), Thomas
Terry (b. SC ca. 1815), Nancy Ann Terry (b. SC ca. 1816), Dr. Richard Everett Terry
(b. SC ca. 1818), James (Jemmes) Terry (b. AL ca. 1820), Hilliard Judge Terry (b. AL ca.
1821), Samuel Curtis Terry (b. AL ca. 1824), Susannah Terry (b. AL ca. 1825), Moses
P. Terry (b. AL ca. 1827), Francis Asbury Terry (b. AL ca. 1828). My
great-grandfather was Hilliard Richardson Terry (b. AL ca. 1853), youngest child of
James "Jemmes" Terry.
My grandfather was Charles W. Terry (b. AL, 1878). My father was Charles W. Terry, Sr.
(b. Greensboro, AL, 1913; d. 1985).
I have much more detail if you're
interested. I have no information though
before James and Susannah (Clements) Terry, except for this description: My
firstTerry ancestor may have come to America during the reign of Bloody
Mary. If so, he was likely fleeing for his life. The early generations of
this family seem to have been devout protestants of the type that Queen Mary
tried to eliminate from England. Whether true or not, it's quite certain
that my Terry ancestors were avid followers of John Wesley and it is quite
possible that the grandfather of the first member of the family to migrate
to Alabama may have become acquainted with Rev. Wesley while he was in
Savannah, Georgia from 1735 to 1738. A Terry ancestor of my line was living
in Savannah about that time. His descendants moved into other parts of
Georgia and to South and North Carolina.
Thanks, Hilliard Terry

Very nice site, especially like being able to view the pedigree. I am trying to trace the
ancestors of my ggg-grandmother Nancy Jane Terry ca 1828 in McNairy Co. TN. Her
parents were William & Permelia Terry. William was born ca 1804 in TN, died in
Pontotoc
Co. MS. Permelia was born 14 May 1808 in S.C. died 4 Aug 1862 in either Lafayette or
Pontotoc Co. MS. They had children named Jesse born ca 1830 who married Sarah A.
Sledge, Ezekial born ca 1832 who married Martha Ann Clements, John born ca 1834 who
married Matilda L. Lyen, James born ca 1836 and Lewis P. born ca 1838 who married
Ester (?). It seems that William & Permelia moved to Pontotoc County in the early
1840's.
Nancy Jane married Lemuel Merry Sledge abt 1847, they had 11 children that we're aware
of.
I would like to hear from descendants of any of the family to Compare notes. I hope
someone has gone back further than William.

You work fast! I sure wish I could talk with my cousin by e-mail to find out what
she has
now on her grandmother. Lula Mae was something of a mystery, I remember my cousin
Rene saying that she had two different stories on her and that she was trying to figure
out which was correct. The fact that she said that her parents had died when she was
only 1 or two might still be accurate if she was related to Alonzo and his wife Louisa.
Did the relationship show up on the census for 1880 or 1900? It would make a big
difference if it says daughter or some other relationship. Also this is quite a bit
of age
difference from what was put on her probated birth record, but a lot of women want to
be younger and "lose" a few years. Rene had speculated that she thought
her grand-
mother Lula Mae was trying to hide something in her past and that she might never be
able to find out who she really was.
I am in the process of writing to Rene to update her on what we have and to see where
her research has led her. I know she will be thrilled, I get a big jolt every time I
receive
information - even when it is not my line.

who married Martha Ann Clements; John Terry b. abt 1834 in TN. who married Matilda L.
Lyen; James Terry b.abt 1836 in TN.; and Lewis P. Terry b. abt 1838 in TN who married
Ester ?.
My information comes from census records & marriage records of Pontotoc and Lafayette
County, Mississippi. Cemetery records of Pontotoc County. and from researchers James
Chapman, Sandra Daniel, Mildred Daniel Moretta, Calvin & Alma Sledge. (James Chapman
is not from the Terry line but has done some work on it as he thinks they hold the key to the
background of Lemuel Merry Sledge - our common ancestor. Lemuel Sledge was in Tenne-
ssee before coming to Pontotoc County, MS and had a previous wife and abt 11 children
from the first marriage. I think that his first wife could have been a relative of William Terry
or Permelia his wife, this is just speculation of course)
Thank you for all your help, I hope to be back in touch soon with my cousin Rene's
comments. If we can tie her in she will want to know about her Terry background.
