Table of Contents Editor's note: I'm still thinking about what to write by Mike Terry William Terry of Botetourt County
Virginia by Kenneth L. Dyer
I'm still thinking about what to write by Mike Terry I have always been somewhat sceptical concerning references to the Botetourt Co. VA family of William Terry who was a constable in 1744 in Augusta County Virginia whose estate was settled about 1803/1804 and his reported wife Rachel Manson. I have seen this marriage reference in post after post on the Terry Genforum and elsewhere.... In fact, I have never seen any court records or bible records indicating Rachel's surname in Virginia -- Have I missed something? In my library the three volume set of Terry
and Allied Families, Volume I by Frances Terry Ingmire I find no mention of
Rachels' surname. There is quite a bit of solid documentation about what happened to the
estate of William Terry. Do the record(s) outside Virginia in some way actually indicate
this is the same William Terry of Botetourt County Virginia? Do the record(s) in NY, NJ,
PA in some way tie in land, estates to people or property in Virginia for this particular
family? I find it curious there are no other Quakers in this particular TERRY family line.
WILLIAM TERRY OF BOTETOURT COUNTY VIRGINIA From: KENNETH L DYER KLDYER@prodigy.net Subject: NY, NJ, PA, VA Terry, Horton, Brown Connections, etc. Mike, I saw the following query tonight and thought I'd send some of my thoughts on the matter. I'm not going to look it up now but I do have a photocopy of the marriage William Terry to Rachel Manson in 1759 at Christ Church in Philadelphia (taken from microfilm). It was in 1990 that I wrote to Mrs. Lula Terry Elliott of Clayton, NM about where she had found this marriage. She said it was found in a "Meeting of Friend's Pennsylvania Marriages" New Jersey license. This was a clue to the right area; however, that is not where I finally tracked down the marriage. The Pennsylvania Archives publications listed it as did a book on Pennsylvania marriages. I've since given this source to quite a few Terry Researchers so am surprised this was the first time it was placed on the Terry Forum. I'm pretty well convinced that the Terrys of Botetourt County, VA are descended from some of the earliest settlers in Mass. After a few years they settled in Southold on Long Island along with the Horton and Brown families. Members of these three families intermarried and migrated to the NJ-PA border area and the connection to Southold is proven by several tombstones which give place of birth. I notice that the uncommon name of Jasper Terry shows up in both NJ and VA. Mrs. Lula Terry Elliott also traced the Brown family of Botetourt to Salem, NJ. My Pinson's arrived in the NJ-PA border area then were in the area of Augusta County, VA by 1730. Could the marriage of William Terry to Rachel Manson have been his first marriage? He could have been a son of an older William Terry who came to VA with the older Jasper Terry. I need to study the tax records I copied down a few days ago but it looks like we may have too many Williams there in the early 1780's. These tax records seem to indicate that Jesse Terry was a son of William and Rachel, and I don't believe I'd ever seen him proposed as one of their eight children. I'll try to get back on this with you later. Kenneth L. Dyer ============================================================ Mark, could you give us the Book, Volume, page citation for this birth certificate? My question for the last 20 years has been similar to yours. What ties this William Terry and wife in Philadelphia to the William Terry in Botetourt Co. VA? Are there any records in Virginia to substantiate this is the same William Terry? What is the link? This is the first time I have ever seen a location for the marriage. Have seen the date and his wife Rachel over and over again on family sheets. ============================================================ EARLY TERRY DATA FOR PENNSYLVANIA - NEW JERSEY BORDER AREA [The following was typed about 1991 when I lived in DeLand, FL]] [Kenneth L. Dyer, 843 Sudden Valley, Bellingham, WA 98226] There is no doubt in my mind that we are on the right track in tracing William Terry and Rachel Manson back to the Pennsylvania-New Jersey border area. The Brown family intermarried with the Terrys and is also from this area. There were also many Masons in both the PA-NJ border area and in the Roanoke area of VA, and I wonder if perhaps Rachel was not a Mason rather than a Manson. There were a few Mansons along the PA-NJ border, but not many. I am convinced there was only one William & Rachel Terry & that William died in Nov or Dec 1792. His inventory may have been recorded years later. I did not find where Miles, William or Jemima signed off on his estate. Pennsylvania Marriages prior to 1810, Vol 1, p. 252 Genealogial Publ. * ========================================================== Comments on the above tax data: 1. What had been the Upper District of Botetourt County in 1789 became the Lower District of Montgomery County by 1790. Most of the Terrys thus became residents of Montgomery County, only William, Sr and his presumed sons, Miles and Jesse remained in Botetourt County. 2. Stephen Terry appears in the Botetourt County personal property tax lists from 1792 through 1804. He is in a different tax district from the other Terrys and is most likely not closely related. 3. It appears that Miles Terry and Jesse Terry stayed with their father, William Terry until he died in 1792. They then disappear from the tax rolls, yet appear in court records pertaining to William Terry's estate for another two years. Based on these tax lists I'm presuming that Jesse was a son of William Terry; however, we have no solid proof. Jesse may have died without issue before William's land was sold. Of the eight heirs to the 300 acres of William and Rachel Terry we have proof for John, Jasper, Mercy, Susannah, Rachel, and Ruth. Jasper had two of these shares, one of which might have been obtained from his brother William, his close neighbor. Miles obviously felt he had some claim as an heir or he wouldn't have sued to have a verbal will instated. I'd say he had probably been promised a larger share for taking care of his father in his old age; however, his other witnesses did not back him up.
by Margie Brown At an earlier time period in the Terry Family Historian under marriages of Bibb Co., Alabama, there was a misidentification of the children of David and Nancy Jordan Terry. This is an attempt to show their true descendants. David and Nancy Jordan Terry married in Warren County, N.C. 11 Nov 1807. and all of their children were born in North Carolina. About 1831 the family moved to Maury County Tennessee. David Terry died in Maury Co. at the age of 61, and his obit can be found in the National Banner, Monday 30 June 1835. Nancy J. Terry survived him and can be found in the 1850 census, still in Maury County with her two youngest children, John and Richard. Her son John M. Terry states (in his write up in "Goodspeed's History of Maury, Williamson, Rutherford, and Marshall counties, page 958 ) that his mother died in 1856. David Terry's Will was written 11 Sep 1832 and is recorded in Deed Book X , p 287, in Maury county. In 1838 one of David and Nancy's son, William D. Terry died. His Will is in Will Bk Y, Vol 1, page 109. Maury Co. In this instrument he names all of his brothers and sisters. 1. In an 1956 letter found in the files of the VA -N.C. Piedmont Society headquarters, in Danville, VA. from Dr. William Seth Terry of Jefferson, Marion Co, TX to Mr. Elijah Sutherlin, he lays out the family of his grandfather and his uncle's families. He sought further information on David Terry's lineage. I wanted to finish this off by saying , I am not a descendant of this family, a little further research by descendants is needed. The clues are abundant, but should be done by someone who comes out of this line. The TERRY Family census on this family is totally flawed. Earnest could not read the census.
